Web (HTTP/HTTPS) monitoring check

How does Web Monitoring check work?

The Web monitoring check is a part of the ClouDNS motoring service, that makes HTTP(S) requests to the given IP address. The hostname, port, and path can be customized.

  • HTTP(S) - Check request is sent over HTTP(S). If the request time-outs or the returned response code is not 200, the check is marked as DOWN.
  • HTTP(S) with custom string in the response - Check request is sent over HTTP(S). If the request time-outs or the returned response code is not 200, or the returned response text is not equal to the defined custom string, the check is marked as DOWN. Response text can be matched based on keyword or exact match.

Why do you need to start using it?

The purpose of the Web check is to verify that your website is functioning appropriately for the users and to ensure website uptime and performance as expected. Our monitoring provides the ability to consistently monitor a website or server function, and observe how it responds. Users that rely on a website or an application for any kind of business will get frustrated or even stop using the application if it is not reliably available.

Which port to use for Web (HTTP/HTTPS) monitoring check?

In order to successfully utilize web (HTTP/HTTPS) monitoring checks, it is important to understand which port should be used. Port 80 is the default port for HTTP web traffic to send and receive packets over the Internet. For HTTPS traffic, the default port is port 443, which uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. This port is necessary for sites that are using SSL encryption to secure their data. It is vital to make sure that the correct port is being used when setting up web (HTTP/HTTPS) monitoring checks, as this will ensure that the check is sending and receiving the correct data.

Debugging

Each Monitoring check provides a debugging option which you can use to find out where the problem comes from using Traceroute information - The traceroute command is used to determine the path between two connections. Often a connection to another device will have to go through multiple routers. The option can be found in the Monitoring check settings page on the right side of the "Uptime changes section".
